increase your storage space
the simple way

Increase your storage space the simple way by cutting down the number of aisles in your distribution facility.  It means that this floor space can now be used for storing more product.

This warehouse design cuts costs, and expands capacity, without any physical changes to the warehouse. The perfect solution to getting more out of your storage space without having to relocate or expand your distribution centre, warehouse or storage facility.

Double deep pallet racking system operates on a first in, last out (FILO) system, making it ideal if you have multiple pallets of the same product stored together for short periods of time.

A forklift fitted with a Double Deep Reach Mechanism is required for placing and retrieving pallets from the rear position in each double deep rack.

Double deep selective racking is adjustable, relocatable and easy to add to, as your business grows and your requirements change.

Double Deep Racking Layout

Double pallet racking allows four single rows of pallets to be stored back-to-back, rather than the two single rows of pallets in standard selective pallet racking. This cuts down the number of access aisles by about half and  increases warehouse storage space by nearly 50%.

Racking can be up to 12 metres in height, utilising the vertical building space available.

Optional Pallet Guides

Pallet guides are lengths of angle steel that help the pallets to be pushed into the correct position and placed square on the rack. Pallet guides enable forklift drivers to load all top pallet racking positions safely, without having to see the rear pallets.

Pallet guides are an optional extra that increase safety and speed when placing and retrieving pallets, especially on upper storage levels.

How to decide if DOUBLE DEEP pallet racking is right for your warehouse?

The most important factors when deciding whether or not double deep storage racks is right for you is:

  • the number of different products/SKUs (stock-keeping units) that you have
  • the volumes of each product
  • type of product
  • throughput rate.

Double deep racking pallet handling system is a last in, first out (LIFO) inventory management system. In a LIFO system, the first pallet loaded into a location is the last pallet to be removed. Therefore it is ideal for the storage of products with a longer shelf life and is not suitable for the storage of perishable goods. This is the same inventory management system as First in, last out (FILO) system.

Double depth racking will provide 30% more storage than selective pallet racking. This allows for a high volume of storage in a limited space. Double deep pallet racks is perfect when you want to utilise your existing space to provide more storage space, eliminating the need to relocate or expand, saving you money.

When to use double deep pallet racking

  • Cold storage where the double-deep option maximises storage while minimizing utility costs
  • Dry storage where durable goods don’t have expiry concerns
  • Bulk storage – Ideal for storage facilities with a minimal range of products, delivering in high volumes
  • Medium to long term shelf life due to LIFO (Last In First Out) loading requirements
  • Warehouses and other storage facilities with restrictive space
  • Business has many pick faces. Multiple forklifts can be in aisles at the same time
  • For businesses where both storage volume and selectivity is key, double deep racking is the best compromise between a selective and high-density pallet racking system
  • Storage space is at a premium within a warehouse and needs to be used as effectively as possible

When not to use double deep racking

  • Your stock includes many different products (SKUs).
  • You need access to 100% of pallets. Only 50% of pallets are accessible with double deep racking when filled to capacity
  • A forklift with a mechanism specially designed to reach the second pallet location is not available
  • You store perishable goods
  • Your inventory of stock is out of date. This decreases the effectiveness and efficiency of the double deep racking system
  • Your building is an irregular shape or your have angled walls.
  • When storage height exceeds 12 metres

Each warehouse storage facility has its own unique set of challenges and goals, therefore we recommend consulting a warehouse layout and design specialist for a professional opinion to assist you in achieving the optimum storage solution for you.

Pallet Guides for increased safety

Pallet Guides for double deep racking

Clients have the option with double deep storage to use pallet guides. They help minimise incidents where pallets and cartons fall from a height.

Pallet guides are lengths of angle steel that create a guide for the pallet to be pushed into position.

They help the pallets to be square and sit in the correct position.

Forklift drivers are able to safely load upper rack positions without seeing the rear pallets.

Pallet guides can be installed onto existing racking beams.

What is Double Deep Pallet Racking
Double Deep Racking is a layout where pallets are stored two deep, back to back. providing higher storage density.

Our double deep pallet racking system operates on a first in, last out (FILO) system, making it ideal if you have multiple pallets of the same product stored together for short periods of time.

Forklift operators are still able to access your stock easily and relatively quickly. However due to the depth, a forklift fitted with a double deep reach mechanism is required to be able to place and retrieve pallets from the rear position in each double deep rack.  The cost of new equipment can be offset by the significant improvements in capacity and productivity that a more efficient storage system provides.

Double deep racking can be adjusted, relocated or added to as your storage needs change, ensuring it is always optimised for your stock and warehousing requirements.

How much does double deep racking cost?

The cost for double pallet racking depends on various factors.  Double deep racking is the lowest cost per square metre of all racking systems. For the most accurate pallet racking price please contact us for a quote.

How does double deep racking work?

Double Deep Pallet Rack storage systems are selective pallet racking solutions which are stored two deep, thus achieving higher storage density.

The pallets are stored mechanically by special forklifts that can reach double pallet depths and that move along the aisles arranged in parallel to the racking system.

Double deep pallet racking works by providing Last In First Out access (LIFO) – whereby 50% of goods are behind other pallets, when filled to capacity.

Which type of lift truck is suitable for double deep rack storage?

This type of racking therefore requires specialised pallet handling equipment using ether a specialised forklift or a standard unit a with double deep handling attachment. The most common forklift used for double-deep handing is a reach truck

Pallet racking can be used for outdoor applications when made from a gal-bond material or have been hot dipped galvanized.
Colby Rack Upright Frames are made from a gal-bond material suited for the outdoors and the base plates used are Hot dipped Gal base-plates.
Usually uprights will be thicker steel than normal and cross bracing for any wind load and as such we use hot-dipped gal beams.
